Overview

Disc Cradle is the culmination of a series of woodworking explorations in bending, shaping, and finishing. Building upon two previous assignments, developing a custom jig to produce bent laminations and hand-shaping a solid walnut disk, the project synthesized these processes into a single structure. Using bent laminations of maple, cherry, and walnut alongside their corresponding veneers, I designed and constructed a freestanding support that cradles the walnut disk. The project explores the relationship between form, material, and structure, transforming the results of previous exercises into a visually complex yet structurally robust design.

Process

initial idea- rapid sketch
bent lamination jig
raw lamination- pre-shaping and sanding
final walnut disk

Final Design Decisions

visual and structural element: disk notches into first stich of each petal
close-up of maple, walnut, and cherry bent lamination and curved profile
waxed-thread lacing secures laminations at its central joint
dowel provides extra strength and visual intrigue
close-up of wedge transition to lamination
lacing reinforces joinery between petal and stem
petal front view; material and visual contrast
stability and craftsmanship shown through balance of petals
